If you’ve lived in the Treasure Valley for even a short time, you already know October can be unpredictable. One afternoon in Boise it’s 68 degrees and feels like summer isn’t done. Two days later you wake up in Nampa or Meridian to frost on the lawn. That’s Idaho.

So when someone asks, “Is it too cold to sealcoat my driveway in October?” the real answer isn’t about the month. It’s about the temperature.

Sealcoating asphalt isn’t just about making your driveway look dark again. It needs the right conditions to cure properly. In general, daytime temperatures should stay above 50–55°F, nights should remain above freezing, and the forecast should be dry for at least a full day after application. What most homeowners don’t realize is that the overnight temperature matters just as much as the afternoon high. You can have a warm 65-degree day in Boise, but if it drops into the low 30s at night, the sealcoat may not cure the way it should.

Mid to late October becomes more uncertain. Once overnight lows start hovering in the low 30s, it’s usually smarter to wait until spring rather than rush the job.

The key isn’t squeezing in one last service before winter. It’s making sure the conditions are right so the sealcoat actually does its job. In Idaho, that means paying attention to real weather patterns, not just the calendar.

If your driveway is fading, drying out, or starting to show small cracks, October might still work. But it has to be the right week. And if the temperatures aren’t cooperating, waiting until late April or May will protect your investment better in the long run.
